Day 4: Finding Peace and Calm in a Busy World

Well, here we are on day 4 of cultivating abundance in 2023. I have felt humbled and empowered writing these posts; it has become a labor of love.
Today's topic is finding peace and calm in a busy, chaotic world. There are two different kinds of people. Some people aren't affected, agitated, or overwhelmed by their surroundings. These people are calm no matter what comes their way. I would say very few are these kinds of people. Maybe they practice being calm every day, or it just comes naturally.
For most, being peaceful and calm is a skill. But did you know that peace is your innate power & wisdom? Our natural state is peaceful & calm. The outside world only drags us down if we let it happen. We don't have to let other people, situations, and habits bring us from our place of serenity. We can let it pass and be cool, collected, high vibe & happy as much as we want.
Easier said than done, right? Hypothetically, you are running late for a flight, there's a lot of traffic on the way to the airport, people are crossing the street, and you are already frantic by the time you finally get to the ticket counter. You realize you don't have your ID with you. You're sweating from the anxiety and accidentally dump your purse on the airport floor, searching for your ID. Change is rolling everywhere, your kid is crying, and your spouse is yelling at you to get your sh*t together. That's enough for one day.
Is it possible to channel that inner peace goddess and stay calm? It sure is! It doesn't have to be quiet, and you don't have to be alone to find your serenity. You can do it anywhere you need to. You can do it on the airplane, in a lounge at the airport, or even standing in line for the security checkpoint.
You don't have to meditate, do yoga, or go for a walk(although they help instantly). You don't need to go on a sacred wellness retreat in the mountains or spend a fortune on tools. We're all human, and we don't need to apologize for being human and getting surprised, frustrated, or angry. It happens to all of us, and that's okay.
Let me share some tips that have helped me stay calm and keep myself from negatively reacting when the tension is HOT! I am no angel, though. I need these reminders every day. And when I do respond, I now have the tools to help me move through my emotions much faster than I ever did before.
1) Breathwork - Practice 4-7-8 anytime and anywhere! This is the practice of breathing in for the count of 4, holding for the count of 7, and exhaling for the count of 8. The key here is to exhale longer than you inhale & hold. Exhaling is where we activate the parasympathetic nervous system, bringing our state back to calm and rest. It's magical, and you can do it anywhere without anyone knowing.
2) Meditation - Bring your awareness inward. Take your attention away from the thoughts in your head, and focus on your breath. Just breathe. Nothing else matters when we do this. When we focus on our breath, we can't bring our attention to the past, future, or current stresses. We can just be.
3) Get outside in nature. If you're feeling anxious and have the ability to, take your shoes off. Use your senses to bring yourself to the present moment. Listen to the sounds of the trees, cars, birds, people, whatever you hear. What do you see? Notice the little details in a beautiful flower or a tree. Do you smell anything? Zoom in to one thing to smell. Touch something, notice the texture of this thing. If you have access to some food, by all means, sit down and enjoy something pleasing to you outside. Doing this will bring your awareness away from a stressful situation.
4) Express yourself. By being creative, inner peace is manifested. You can do this by making art of any kind, and when you do this, it contributes to your overall well-being. It’s one the most mindful things you can do, as you only focus on what you do. As you create your art, pay attention to the details, and get into the creator flow state, the magic! Whatever it is, music, drawing a picture, or painting a canvas: being in the creator state of mind puts you at ease and shifts a chaotic mindset of pain and anxieties to tranquility. It doesn't matter if you think you're not great at creating your art of choice. You are a creator, and your art creates something majestic inside of you. Trust in the skills, and you will be so happy you did!
5) Practice a form of mindfulness every day. This can be achieved at any time of the day. It brings your awareness back to the present moment. Throughout the day, notice the little things that bring you joy. It can be sipping a cup of coffee, drinking water with lemon, tasting chocolate, petting your dog, cuddling with your child, cooking and tasting your meal, journaling, writing a note, lighting a candle, taking a bath, and so on. Whatever makes you happy, do that most presently.
In yoga philosophy, peace means returning to a place of stillness, Pratyahara. This essentially means releasing the senses through meditation.
Traditionally, the purpose of yoga is to show us the way back home to the Truth that we know deep within our hearts. A peaceful and true mind is free from attachment to outside elements and our mind’s attraction or aversion toward them.

I hope you learned something or brought awareness to something you already knew. I know challenging times can be tricky and can get us into a stressful state of mind. Remember, you can't control what happens to you but can control how you react. It will be all good if you choose to let it go and be in a place of peace.
