Cultivating Abundance in 2023! Finding Balance

Updated: Jan 26, 2023

Finding Balance When Life Feels Unsteady

"Getting in balance is not so much about adopting new strategies to change your behaviors, as it is about realigning yourself in all of your thoughts to create a balance between what you desire and how you conduct your life on a daily basis." Wayne Dyer, Being in Balance

Balance. What does balance mean to you? I've explored this word and its meaning a lot in the last four years. It's not something I've ever had before I began my first yoga teacher training. But it is essential in our everyday lives. Without balance, we create stress, anxiety, unsteady fluctuations in our thoughts & feelings, wavering decisions, and chaos.

Think of a ladder that is firm, stable, and strong. It doesn't take much for the ladder to become off balance. It takes a few tweaks to get it just right. But with a little focus on what needs to happen to get the ladder just right, it becomes strong, capable, and balanced.

Our lives are very much the same. We have different areas of ourselves that we should keep in mind when we feel out of alignment.

The Mind - Body - Soul Connection:

How your thoughts and feelings affect your physical well-being. And vice-versa, how your physical well-being affects your thoughts and feelings. It's all a progress of balance.

Scientifically, your mind is affected by everything you do. Your thoughts, actions, and behaviors are all interconnected. If you sit on the couch eating potato chips while watching a dumb comedy and repeatedly do this while screaming at your kids, your brain will react, tripping those electrical charges as so. Balance is key!

Mentally Stimulating Exercises. Doing mentally stimulating exercises benefits your brain cells on a cellular level. Some exercises include puzzles, games like chess, learning or playing a new instrument, painting, creating art, learning a new language, and so much more! These types of mental skill exercises have massive benefits!

Food. Let's talk about food that we energetically & physically ingest. We can choose to eat organically, healthy and our physical body will make improvements. Simultaneously, your thoughts and feelings will also improve. What if you become so obsessed with eating healthy that it becomes your obsession? You will see that it negatively affects you because it becomes an attachment. I discussed that in my 'Day 2 in Cultivating Health & Wellness'. You can enjoy that cookie! Just be mindful of how much is enough. You don't want to negatively affect yourself by what you put in your body.

Let's talk about people. People are a big part of our everyday lives. Sometimes, we have to see people because of work, school, or events, and we can't control other people's attitudes. There are happy-go-lucky people; then you have the toxic, negative people. What can we do here? It's a tricky balancing act. If someone in your life is always negative, so much so that they begin to drain your energy, it's time to take a step back. Share less time with them. Stay positive and be a light for them when you are around them. Protect your energy, as that's how you will stay in balance. Surround yourself around people who match your energetic frequency or lift you up. You will find these people easier to be around.

Work. Work & Life is a constant balancing act, isn't it?

Let's say you have a career; it's a really great career. You make money, show up daily, and realistically, and it works. But you know that you work too much, your family needs you, and you can't make any of your children's performances or games or help them with their homework. Is it worth it? Does this sound like you?

On the other side, you are a stay-at-home parent. You spend every minute of your day tending to your family's needs. You don't have time for yourself or your social relationships. You want to create all kinds of things to nourish your passions, but you don't have the time. You are exhausted! Does this sound like you?

How much work is too much? How much is not enough? Each person is different here. How do you know when you've worked too hard and you've given too much of your time & energy? You know! It's when you find yourself stressed, overwhelmed, and work becomes hard. You don't want to go and would rather do anything else. You are not married to your job, and your job is replaceable. If you don't love your job, find another one that makes the same amount of money or more! You are worth feeling amazing every single day in work & life. It's up to you.

Exercise. There is such a thing as too much exercise! I know, crazy, right? You know when you become overwhelmed, agitated, and stressed about your workout schedule? You have a goal for this perfect body, but you still haven't achieved it. It's so close, but if you work a little harder, you will get that body. Does this sound like you?

Not enough exercise produces feelings of exhaustion, laziness, unmotivated, uselessness, and depression. Know your limits and balance your own exercise routine so that you feel uplifted, happy, energetic, and at ease. Take baby steps if you don't work out and want to begin. Get a personal trainer. Do a video that you like. A little progress every day.

Sleep & Rest. There are 3 kinds of sleepers.

1) People who could sleep all day and never feel like it's enough.

2) People who say sleep is overrated and they will sleep when they're dead.

3) People who can get to bed at a decent hour get 7-9 hours of sleep and feel rested and ready to take on the day.

Which kind of sleeper are you? Balance. We need sleep to survive. Too much sleep is unhealthy. You got this! I will have a topic on sleep soon, so stay tuned!

Purpose. If you are a stay-at-home parent and feel you have no purpose, it's there. It's waiting for you to find it!

If you have a career that doesn't light you up and certainly doesn't fill your passions bucket, maybe it's time to change. Your mental & emotional wellness is important! It's the only life you have. You deserve to have the job/career of your dreams!

Self Care. This is the most important piece to finding balance in your mind, body, and soul. Take care of yourself first; you will have unlimited energy and time to help the people around you. You will be able to work enthusiastically, be present with your family, enjoy conversations with all kinds of people, and so on. You will also want to eat healthy and exercise because you know it feels good.

Self-care tips:

1) Take a bath.

2) Get a massage.

3) Meditate! ( My fav!)

4) Do some yoga for the mind, body & soul connection.

5) Go on a walk or take a hike.

6) Breath deeply with calming music.

7) Connect with friends and family you love!

8) Eat a nourishing meal that makes you happy.

9) Sleep enough to feel energized and motivated.

10) Get some exercise, and raise your heart rate!

11) Eliminate stress in your life.

12) Create a daily self-care routine.

13) Create a sacred space for spiritual development

14) Learn something new!

15) Learn a new hobby or musical instrument.

16) Practice forgiveness to self & others. (THIS IS HUGE!)

Balance in life happens when we acknowledge that we are out of alignment. We begin to take self-care steps. With that, we learn when how much is too much or not enough.

In this picture, I was on the edge of a mountain top; I meditated that day, ate pretty healthy, exercised, socialized with some friends, and overall felt pretty good, happy & balanced. My photographer asked me to climb a cliff to get the perfect shot with the silhouette. I am always up for a challenge, so I did it. I was literally on the edge, my toes hanging off, and felt a sense of uneasiness. I looked down, and there were 15+ feet below me. I thought I could do this. This is what I have been working towards all along. So I took a deep breath in, lifted my left leg up, and rested the soul of my foot to meet my inner right thigh. I lifted my arms, pressed my thumbs into my index fingers, and released a sigh. An exhale of relief. It wasn't an anxious exhale because I did the self-care that week to stay balanced. I made it through that moment without reacting. I believed in myself that I could do it, and I did it!

If I didn't meditate, eaten healthily, socialized with friends, exercised, and didn't feel good about myself during the photo shoot, my thoughts would have been all over the place; my breath would be erratic, and I wouldn't have been capable. I wouldn't have the balance I needed that day to show up and make it happen.

Think of yourself like a tree. A tree is balanced, strong, and unwavering. The tree is connected deep into the earth, grounded, and peaceful. The tree is your symbol of balance. When your tree is neglected, you will become as so. When you are balanced and happy, it will show.
